"The idea is that all four editions in The Early Days Collection will show stages of development that, overall, show the whisky world the story of the beginning of Box Distillery. The Explorer is mainly a bourbon matured whisky that is matured in three different cask sizes of 40, 100 and 130 liter casks. The ages range from three years and three months up to just over four years. Just over 60 percent of the whisky used comes from a smoky distillate, which gives The Explorer a rather smoky touch. Much of The Explorer’s taste profile comes from new oak. Twelve percent of the in going casks are made from virgin oak, new oak barrels that have not been used to store wine or bourbon whiskey. The new oak barrels contribute many powerful flavours. Three oak species have been used for The Explorer: Swedish oak (Quercus robur), American oak (Quercus alba) and Hungarian oak (Quercus petraea). The Explorer thereby becomes a first study in oak and by what a skilled blender can do with oak types and different roasting degrees."

Box The Explorer – Review
Colour: old gold to amber.
On the nose: tangerines, pears, very honeyed. Needs lots of time in the glass. Lime marmalade. Perfumed notes, jasmine. Now this sweetness – butterscotch too – all contrasts very nicely with the gentle woodsmoke peat. Big maltiness underneath it all, nutmeg, gentle spices. Muscovado sugar – just a touch, then tropical notes, pineapple, return.
In the mouth: give it a swirl to enjoy that lovely texture. Quite dry for a Box whisky, but that comes with a lovely cloying mouthfeel – thick, juicy. Briney, and the peat is expressed in a wonderfully charred nature. Chocolate, nutmeg, gentle warmth from the wood. Cinnamon. Quite nutty too – walnuts, hazelnuts. Flashes of aniseed, but leans then towards apricots and lemon curd.
Conclusions
Just another excellent whisky, and interesting – full of subtle layers. Well made, interesting flavours, more developing here than with the Dalvve, but we must remember it’s still relatively young. And it’s when you consider that it is a young whisky that you realise how good this is.

High Coast Distillery ligger i en gammel savmølle ved Ångerman-floden i Ådalen i det nordlige Sverige. Her laver de 100.000 liter ren alkohol om året, og visionen er enkel: at lave verdens bedste single malt whisky. Derfor er der naturligvis stort fokus på både råvarer og finesser i produktionen: man bruger både pilsnermalt fra Halmstad i Sverige og røget malt der importeres fra Skotland, vandet kommer fra den lokale flod og gæringen er usædvanligt lang for at skabe så meget smag som muligt. Destilleriet er et af de nordligst beliggende i hele verden, og der er enorme temperaturudsving i deres lagre (som ikke er temperaturstyrede) hvilket har en radikal effekt på whiskyens interaktion med træfadene. Man bruger to typer fade, både first-fill bourbonfade af amerikansk hvideg og spanske oloroso-sherryfade. Nogle bygges også om til en traditionel, svensk fadtype kaldet ankare, som indeholder lige knap 40 liter. Disse bruges især til private aftapninger.
